Bar foot rail height and bracket spacing — the numbers that matter

Two numbers decide whether a bar foot rail feels right or gets ignored: how high it sits, and how often it is supported. Get them wrong and the rail flexes underfoot or sits awkwardly against the stools. Here are the numbers, and how our custom bar foot rail builder applies them automatically.

Standard bar foot rail height: 6 to 8 inches

Industry guides put a comfortable installed foot rail height at around 6–8″ off the floor. In that range, a seated guest can hook a heel on the rail and a standing guest can rest a foot without shifting their weight awkwardly.

Our kits land in that zone by design — the mount type sets the height:

• Floor mount: rail centreline at 5 9⁄16″ (141 mm), with support tees dropping to flanges bolted into the floor.
• Bar mount: rail centreline at 6 7⁄8″ (175 mm), leaving about 140 mm of clear floor beneath the rail.

What you choose instead is length, shape and tube diameter — and those drive the support math.

Bracket spacing: one near each end, then every 3 to 4 feet

The general rule for foot rail brackets: place a support 2–6″ from each end of the run, then one every 3–4 ft along the length. Spacing matters more than most people expect. A foot rail carries the full weight of a standing adult, and a long unsupported span feels springy no matter how good the tube is.

Our kit anchors the ends differently, which changes the math. The rail ends are carried by the end returns themselves: flanged 90° elbows that curve into the floor or bar face, or tee ends closed with end caps. With the ends already anchored, a TIG-welded support tee is added only when a span would exceed 6 ft (72″) — and tees are always placed to divide the run into perfectly equal spans, so a single support lands dead centre and the line stays symmetric. Floor mount vs bar mount

Floor mount is the classic: flanges bolt straight into the floor and the rail reads as part of the room.

Bar mount floats the rail on the bar face instead. Flanges bolt to the front panel, there are no floor anchors, and the clear space beneath makes cleaning under the rail easy. Every bar-mount kit ships with an internal locking flange: the through-bolts clamp the bar panel between the front flange and a second flange inside the bar, so the rail holds solid even where the millwork is thin.

1.5″ or 2″ OD: when to size up

Both diameters are stainless steel bar rail tubing cut to your exact length. 2″ OD is the commercial standard and what most bars order. 1.5″ OD suits tighter residential bars, where the smaller tube keeps the rail in proportion with the space.

Long runs are handled inside the system. Sides over 96″ ship as shorter sections that meet inside a support tee — the fitting itself is the connection, so there is no splice piece and no visible joint. Straight, L and U layouts run up to 240″ per side, and a run long enough to need a mid-span joint needs that tee for support anyway: one part, two jobs.
